CONTROL TO BE CONTINUED
AUSTRALIAN COASTAL SHIPPING Canberra, Aug. 29. The Full Cabinet has decided to continue Government control of Australian coastal shipping. The Prime Minister, Mr Chifley, announced that a departmental committee would report on the desirability of establishing an Australian shipping line to operate overseas. The Government’s plans include: Merchant shipbuilding to be continued at the rate of 32,000 tons gross a year. Naval building to be planned so as not to interfere with the merchant programme and to ensure stability of the industry. The inter-State coastal trade to be reserved to Australian-built ships subject to the right of the Minister to approve an exception in special cases. No ships more than 25 years old arc to be licensed for the coastal trade. The purchase price of Australian-built ships is to be subsidised if necessary Mr Chifley said Cabinet considered the maintenance of merchant shipbuilding in peacetime essential for defence purposes.
