FEMALE STAFF 24 SHORT
The staff position has become worse recently and more nurses are likely to b e lost in the near future. This is not because of any dissatisfaction, but is the result of servicemen returning from overseas. Some nurses are rejoining their husbands and others are leaving to get married. To care for the 1100 patients at the Nelson Mental Hospital 119 female nurses and 64 male nurses are required, as well as domestic and tradesmen. The female staff is 24 short at present, and another three will be leaving soon. At present, first year nurses begin at a salary of £l6O, rising to £2OO by the time they become senior nurses. Charge nurses receive £230-£250, and matrons from £315-£465. Board is provided, as in any institution. The nurses also receive six uniforms a year and concessions in the purchase of stockings and shoes. In addition to time off during the week nurses receive thirty days every six months.
