NELSON TRAMPING CLUB
TRIP TO THE DOUBLES Eleven members of the Nelson Tramping Club met at 8 a.m. on Sunday to bicycle up the Maitai Valley before climbing the Doubles. The club has had bad luck this winter, for a large proportion of tramps has had to be postponed on account of weather conditions. However, Sunday w s a perfect day and after a snack on the Maungatapu track, nine of the party branch'd left at the saddle to follow the blazed trail up the southern of First Double, while two had lunch at Surveyors' Flat and then Will On down to Murderers' Rock. There is little view from the First Double, but right on the*'summit there is a large tarn about 150 yards in length and fen or fifteen yards wide, quite an unexpected sight, for there is no stream outlet or intake. There was no time to make the journey across to the other Double, which with its twin is the hill many Nelsonians erroneously call the Maun-, gatapu. The Maungatapu is behind the* Doubles and is not visible from the city. Mr N. S. Tankersley was the leader for the day.
