N.Z. BASKETBALL TOURNEY
NELSON TEAM SELECTED The Nelson representative team to play in the New Zealand Women’s Basketball Championships has been selected. The players are as follows: Forwards: P. Murphy, P. Merritt, N. Nicholls, J. Hurst. Centres: S. Costello, J. Bethwaite, S. Jones, D. Costello. Defence: B. Burn, N. Evans, B Lammas, J. Hill The championships will be played at Christchurch on the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th August. The Nelson team will leave for Christchurch on Tuesday, 21st August, and will return on the following Sunday. The team is a young one and with conscientious and regular training during the past few weeks it has developed into a promising combination. In the forwards P. Murphy is a reliable and almost faultless court worker, and her partner, P. Merritt, is the best shooter. N. Nicholls and J. Hurst are first-year representatives who have been showing very good form. The selection of the centres gave the selector. Mrs W. A Dee, much thought and planning. S. Costello is an expert centre S. Jones. J. Bethwaite and D. Costello are new representatives, and of these S. Jones has shown outstanding improvement during the training period All three have worked hard for their places in the team
Tne defence section will be steady and reliable. B. Burn, who has been nominated for the South Island Service team, is showing even better form than in previous years. J. Hill is a quick mover who is hard to lose by an opponent and N. Evans’s interceptions and deliveries are pleasing to watch. B Lammas is also a first-year representative who can be relied on to play steadily in a last game.
