NELSON COLLEGES

PREFABRICATED CLASSROOMS APPLIED FOR

SHORTAGE OF ACCOMMODATION FOR GIRLS MEETING OF COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS As a temporary measure to alleviate the shortage of accommodation at the Girls' College, the Nelson College Council of Governors at its meeting last evening resolved to make application for three prefabricated classrooms. The decision was made following the reading of a report from the principal. Miss J. Stewart, which stated: — "In spile of all the official visits we have had, and the promises of increased clas room accommodation, there seems to be no likelihood of permanent additions being made in the near future. It seems, therefore, necessary to apply now for prefabricated classrooms to alleviate our present difficulties of accommodation. The room next to the gymnasium is hopeless as a classroom and although I feel that it will provide a temporary measure of accommodation for the lower preparatory classes next term, it cannot continue to be used longer, even for them. It is with reluctance that I now ask for three prefabricated classrooms in the bope that at least two would be ready at the beginning of the year.”' On the motion of Mr D. F. Horlor it was resolved that application be made for three prefabricated buildings and that representations be made to the Department of Education stressing the urgent need of this temporary accommodation. The chairman, Mr C. R. Fell, presided at the meeting, other members present being Lady B. M. Scott, Mrs E. R. M. Childs, Dr. W. D. S. Johnston, Messrs H. Barltrop, S. W. Kenning, D. F. Horlor, and L. H. Bull. Messrs H. Atmore, C.. M. Collins, F. W. Hamilton. D. Max, and C. Milner were excused from a‘tendance. STAFF APPOINTMENTS Miss Hazel Barltrop was appointed to the position on the staff of the Nelson Girls’ College at present held by Mrs F. Mason, whose resignation was accepted. Mr C. B. Sage. M.A., was appointed to the vacant position on the staff of Boys’ College caused by the resignation of Mr R. Henderson who has received an appointment at the Ohura District High School. GIFTS TO GIRLS’ COLLEGE On behalf of the Girls’ College the principal (Miss J. Stewart) acknowledge .the following gifts: a collection of minerals and fossils from an qx-pupil (Mrs Hickmott, nee Griffin), twenty books for the library from Mrs Tanner, of Richmond, in memory of her daughter Averil; a cheque for 10 guineas from an anonymous donor; a set of 14 volumes on music. “An International Library of Music”, also from an anonymous donor.
