LABOUR SURVEY

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS IN NELSON

POST-WAR EXPANSION OF INDUSTRY

In conjunction with the Organ* ixalion for National Development, the National Service Department in conducting a comprehensive survey of employment prospects in Nelson industry, in order that a plan may be formulated to meet the difficulties anticipated in the transition from war-time to peacetime conditions. A letter is being sent to all employers requesting information as to:— <1) Their estimated absorption capacity of labour at present on military service or engaged in war production. (2) Their estimated outflow of labour when war production ceases. Details of trades or skilled occupations affected are being asked for in each case. The enquiry pays particular reference to post-war expansion and prospective new industries, as frequently such proposals will involve demands on the building industry in addition to staff and labour increases. The department hopes that industry will respond wholeheartedly to this survey as the full co-operation of all concerned is necessary to ensure the success of the scheme. An undertaking is given that all replies will be treated as strictly confidential, and the scheme has the approval and support of the local Employers’ Association. The survey is expected to aid very materially in the succesful rehabilita* tion of ex-servicemen in the district and also be of great value in the pogtv.’ar planning being undertaken by the O.N.D.
