STORMY CONDITIONS

HEAVY RAIN LAST NIGHT ROAD FLOODED AT APPLEBY MINOR FLOODING IN CITY Heavy falls of rain last ni*ht and this morning caused the flooding of rivers in the country districts and the overloading of the city stormwater drainage system which resulted in the flooding of streets in some parts of the town. The rain was accompanied by a fresh northeasterly wind. Following heavy showers this morning the road at the intersection of Hardy and Rutherford streets became flooded, with small geysers over the drainage manholes through which the water forced its way. The junction of Bridge and Rutherford streets was also covered with stormwater, and there was considerable surface water along the lower part of Varguard. street. However, it soon cleared when 'he rain ceased temporarily later in the morning. The Waimea river rose rapidly this morning and crossed the road on the Redwood's Valley side of the Appleby bridge at 7 a.m. By 9 a.m. there was iwo feet of water across the road and all traffic on that route was blocked. The river was still rising during the morning but at 11 a.m. it had not reached the road at Brightwater. The Wai-iti river at that time was bank high and still rising. The Maitai river was also in flood during the morning, the water reaching the paths alongside the river in several places in the city. The Cawthron Institute recorded 1.73 inches of rain in the 24 hours up to 9 30 o’clock this morning. The north-easterly wind whipped up , stormy seas in the bay and early this , morning i'%; waves along the Rocks road broke across the highway in places.
