SOIL CONSERVATION

TASMAN ADULT EDUCATION GROUP

The monthly meeting of the Tasman Adult Education Group was attended by 18 members. The speaker was Mr. C. I. Kidson, chairman Nelson Catchment Board, and his subject was “Soil Erosion and Soil Conservation.” Illustrating hie address by means of maps, plans, photographs and documentary evidence, Mr Kidson secured and held close attention of the hearer's for 1J hours, and at the close answered a number of questions and made valuable suggestions as to ways in which “the man in the street” could co-operate with the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council, the Catchment Board and local committees. While not condemning River Control work—the ambulance at the foot of the cliff—he urged one and all to assist by every means in their power, in the erection of the fence at the top of the cliff, which they might take the form of planned and systematic Afforestation, destruction of rabbits, goats, deer and oppossums, and well planned contour cultivation and rotation of crops. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. The next meeting will inaugurate a series of six discussions on “Physical Science, as it affects our lives,” the leader to be Mr A. F. Hercus. The group comprises over 20 members, with quite a number of the younger men of the community actively participating.
