RETURNED SOLDIER INSTALLED IN EMPTY HOUSE Melbourne, Aug. 3 Arising from Melbourne’s serious house shortage a group of returned servicemen styling themselves vigilantes on the lines of that body recently operating in Brighton, England, tonight installed a returned soldier, his wife and two children in a vacant house in Hawthorn suburb. The house, .which had been rented but not ooccupied by an 80-year-old man for sentimental reasons, has been vacant three years. The family had been living in one room In another suburb. While the moving-in process was going on a policeman passing by on a cycle stopped to inquire the cause of commotijn. On being told that it was a family taking possession of a home, he said: “That all?” and cycled on his way.
The vigilantes claim that if something is not done to relieve the housing position soon they will take over other houses, including the Captain Cook cottage in Fitzroy Gardens. This cottage was acquired in England some years ago by a public-spirited Melbourne citizen, and transported sectionallv to Melbourne and re-erected in the gardens as a gift to the city and a memorial to Captain Cook.
