BUILDING BY-LAWS

FINES FOR BREACHES Three prosecutions for breaches of the building bylaws were brought before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr W. V. Fletcher laid the informations on behalf of the City Council. Charles Berg (Mr K. E. Knapp) was charged with erecting a building in Bridge street without a permit from the City Engineer. Mr Fletcher said that the defendant had earned out alterations to a building in Bridge street, in the brick area, using iron and wood. All alterations should be in brick. Mr Knapp said that the roof was blown off an old shed at the back of defendant’s premises and defendant reconslructed the existing shed. It was simply an open lean-to, in the nature of a temporary structure. Mr Fletcher said that there was an amount of building going on in the city without permits, and when at the back of premises they were difficult to trace. A fine of £2 and 10s costs, with solicitor’s fee £1 ll s 6d, was imposed. There was a similar charge against Jessica Prior (Mr W. V. Rout). Mr Fletcher said that in this case a leanto was built in front of the bakehouse. Mr Rout said that it was put up to cover a washing-up trough It was built of iron. The fine was the same as in the previous case. Sydney W. J. Hockey pleaded not guilty to a charge of erecting a building in Mill street without a permit. R. P. Anderson, building inspector, said that the defendant had altered an existing building in Mill street without a permit. He had had a permit six months previously for a stable but that had expired. Defendant had built a sleeping room and kitchen on the end of the stable. Defendant admitted that the permit had expired before the additions had been made and that he had not had a permit for the additions. He was fined £l. costs 10s. and solicitor’s fee £1 lls Gd.
