BUTTER ALLOWANCE

EXTRA RATION IN SPECIAL CASES

Wellington, This Day. Details of the method to be adopted in implementing the decision of the Government to restore the butter ration to* the previous level of Boz a week to expectant and nursing mothers, people 70 years of age and over, and to certain classes and groups of workers, were announced yesterday by the food and rationing controller, Mr A. J. Costelloe. The extra two ounces a week will be made available in the meantime by the issue of a card containing one butter coupon valid for half a pound in respect of each four-weekly period from 9th July till the close of the current ration book in October next. The coupons on the card are numbered emergency coupons, available for redemption with any retailer who will substantiate his sales by cutting out coupons as the butter is supplied. Application for the card by expectant and nursing mothers may be made at any rationing office on and after 10th July, to be supported by the supplementary ration book with which they have already been issued- People 70 years of age and over may apply from the same date by producing satisfactory proof of their age and their current ration books for endorsement. In both cases, application by some other member of the family is permissible if for some reason it cannot be made personally. With regard to the workers who qualify—certain members of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, the Freezing Workers’ Union, also some railwaymen —they will receive advice through their respective organisations and all inquiries should be addressed to the organisations. Other workers who qualify either as requiring regularly two sandwich meals each day and having no access to cafeteria or restaurants, or on account of working alone in isolated localities under difficult conditions, should make application in the first instance to their employers. The employers in turn are requested to certify such applications and forward on to the rationing controller, Wellington, for attention.
