RUGBY FOOTBALL

GOLDEN BAY GAMES WIN FOR COLLINGWOOD TEAM Club matches were continued in! Golden Bay on Saturday when Colling- I wood seniors met Golden Bay seniors . on the showground at Takaka. The ( weather was dull and the heavy rain on the preceding day had left the i ground very slippery. The greasy con- , ditions made the game mainly a forward one and the backs had very little : chance of combining in passing rushes, j Golden Bay attacked strongly for the ; first part, of the game and their for- 1 wards kept the Collingwood team on j the defensive till a good dribbling rush j led by Prince and Woolfe resulted in ; Woolfe scoring in a handy position. ; Taylor converted. Collingwood rallied and pinned Bay in their 25 until from a scrum near the line, R. Hunter at half slipped round the scrum for a neat try. The kick failed. Shortly afterwards Collingwood increased their score by an unconverted try by Spittal. After, halftime the Bay backs combined well and Taylor was tackled just short of the line. Collingwood were awarded a penalty on the Bay 25 and Riley’s kick struck the crossbar. Spittal, who followed up fast, caught the ball on the bounce and dashed over— Collingwood 9, Bay 5. Bay rallied and Woolfe and J. Feljowes were unlucky not to score, both slipping and falling I when close to the line. Collingwood. by j line kicks, reached the Bay line and from a scrum R. Hunter again scored. Right on the call of time Spittal led the Collingwood forwards in a good dribbling rush and again scored a try, which Riley converted, making the final score: Collingwood 14, Bay 5. The referee was Mr R. J. Papps. JUNIOR GAME At Collingwood, the Collingwood juniors defeated Old Boys’ B by 16 points to nil under very unpleasant conditions. Heavy rain fell throughout the game and there were large sheets of water on the playing area. In spite of this the Collingwood backs handled the slippery ball very safely and combined splendidly. For Collingwood tries were scored by R. Fish, R. Smith, J. Curnow and K. Pomeroy, while Curnow and I. Solly converted two. Solly, at fullback for Collingwood. made no mistake with a very greasy ball, and F. Taylor worked hard for the Old Boys’ pack. Mr N. Curnow controlled the match.

UNITED DEFEATED BY DOVEDALE The second of the senior matches resulted in an overwhelming Victory fi>r Dovedale. the visitors defeating United by 37 points to nil. United failed to field a full team, and from the start the game was too onesided to be really interesting. Although the United defence worked hard ana played as well as possible in the circumstances. they were hopelessly out classed. Good team-work by the Dovedale backs and forwards gave them an easy victory, the work of M. Stevens contributing substantially to the result. Tries were scored for Dovedale by C. Davis (4), J. Mytton. Haycock, V. Hawkes. M. Eyles. J. Nicholson and F. Biggs, only two of the 10 tries being converted. A penalty goal completed the total of 37 points. The referee was Mr D. Askew.
