JULY PETROL COUPON
Wellington, This Day.
The decision of the War Cabinet to make petrol coupon No. 1 (new series) .available to private motorists for July at its face value, has been, announced by the Minister of Supply and Munitions. Mr. Sullivan. He also stated that shortly he hoped to be able to make a general statement about the future petrol position. “In making this announcement.” said the Minister. “I feel that I should give some idea of the Government's policy in regard to the petyoL position generally. On the termination of the war in Europe representations were made to tbe authorities in London and Washington for an increase in the allocation of petrol made to this country. It was felt that restrictions should be lifted as far as was practicable in order that some relief could be given to the motoring public in the Dominion. Ii is unfortunately not possible nr. present to make n general statement on the position, but I hope to be able to do The Minister added that in a desire to afford some relief to private motorists who l»a<l been severely rationed over the past few years, it was felt that the July allowance should in any case be maintained at the equivalent of the May and June level. This allowance would relieve New Zealand’s already heavily overtaxed passenger transport services and would assist the general public in their transport arrangements during July. The Minister emphasized that the tyre position was still serious, with no prospect of immediate improvement, so that the utmost conservation of tyres, ns well as petrol, was still necessary.
