THE WEKA STREET TIP
• [To the Editor! Sir, —"Thoughtful's” letter in Saturday’s “Mail” contained very interesting reading. I am sure the 185 petitioners in the Wood area are pleased to see someone outside the Ozone Zone stressing the appalling condition existing, for we spent a very uncomfortable day on Saturday, the smell penetrating houses and also making gardening very unpleasant. For “Thoughtful’s” benefit, I would like to state that the last petition to the council drew their attention to four clauses in the Nelson City Nuisance By-Law, and quoted one which read: “No person, being the owner, occupier or person in charge of any land or premises within the City, shall permit, suffer or allow any nightsoil manure or refuse, or any offensive rubbish or matter of any kind whatever to accumulate or remain or be in or upon any land or premises within the City, so as to be or be likely to become injurious to health or so as to cause an offensive smell.” It is strange that the council, though condemned by their own by-laws, deliberately ride rough-shod over them and also the citizens’ wishes. This reminds one so much of Nazi-ism that one wonders just where the common people stand. The engineer’s report of the tip was very explicit and showed the systenn used had proved a failure on the mudflat, but still the council maintained its dogmatic decision. Surely the time is ripe for some enterprising person or persons to bring into being a Ratepayers’ Association so that we can have justice or some method of keeping those we elect to guard our interests from wandering towards officialism.—l am. etc.. “THOUGHTFUL TOO.” Nelson, 9th June..
