FREEZING INDUSTRY LABOUR

REPORTED SHORTAGE IN SOUTH Wellington, This Day. A reply to criticism of the manpower policy and the alleged shortage of labour in the Southland freezing works, as expressed by delegates at the Southland Farmers’ Union Conference, has been made by the Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr McLagan. After taking exception to the wording of a telegram which had been sent to him by the conference, the Minister said: “I ajn advised that necessary replacements have been provided for men recently released from freezing works for military service under the replacement scheme, and that all freezing works in the Soulhland-Olago district are fully manned. It will therefore be seen that if farmers are experiencing any difficulty in arranging for their stock to be accepted by the freezing works, this is in no way due to shortage of labour in the works.”
