500 MILES AN HOUR
BRITISH JET-PROPELLED FIGHTER THREE OTHER PLANES ALSO OFF SECRET LIST Rugby, June 8. A new type of jet-propelled singleseater fighter to be known as the "Vampire,” powered by a single gas turbine engine, has been designed and is being built by the de Havilland Company. The Vampire has a speed in excess of 500 miles an hour. The second machine, designed by the de Havilland Company, is a twin-en-gined fighter which is a scaled down version of the Mosquito. This aircraft is known as the "Birnet” and will be powered by Rolls Royce Merlin engines and has a top speed of over 470 miles an hour. Vickers Armstrong are building the “Spiteful,” a single-seater, single-en-gined fighter developed from the world famous Spitfire. This aircraft is powered by a Rolls Royce Griffon engine and has a top speed of over 460 miles an hour. A new four-engined bomber, developed from the Lancaster, will be known as the “Lincoln.” It will carry the heaviest bombs over a range considerably in excess of the Lancaster and at o greater speed. The Lincoln is powered by Rolols Royce Merlin engines and will be manufactured in the united Kingdom as well as in Canada and Australia.
