FAIR TO FINE AND COLD Wellington, This Day. Situation: An anti-cyclone covers the Tasman and a deep trough is near the Chathams. Forecast to 5 p.m. Saturday: Moderate south-westerly winds, freshening at times, weather fair to fine, temperatures cold with frosts. Further outlook fair to fine conditions.
There was a sudden change to midwinter conditions yesterday after a spell of temperate weather. A cold south-wester which brought heavy snow on the higher country, kent the maximum temperature yesterday down to 50.8 degrees. Last night the heaviest frost of the winter was recorded, 7.9 degrees being registered at the Cawthron Institnute. At 9.30 o’clock this morning the temperature was still just below freezing point. A brilliantly fine day followed the cold night, but there was a biting south-west breeze. There was only 3 hours 35 minutes’ sunshine yesterday and four points of rain fell. SNOW IN GOLDEN BAY After a showery morning in Golden Bay yesterday the temperature dropped considerably when a cold southerly wind started and snow fell on the hills. This morning the hills and mountains of Golden Bay were coated with snow, the bush clad lower slopes also being covered. There was an inch of snow on the road at the top of the Takaka Hill this morning. To’day was fine and sunny in Takaka, following a heavy frost.
