EUROPEAN WAR
MILITARY CASUALTIES ESTIMATED AT 70,000,000 CIVILIANS NOT INCLUDED New York, June 5. The total military casualties in the European war, according to tentative War Department estimates, recently made, were about 70,000,000, the greatest recorded toll cf any war in history, says the “New York Times” correspondent, Hansen Baldwin. Killed or dipd numbered 14,000,000, compared with 8,538,000 in the First World War. Though the estimates may well prove excessive, H is noteworthy that the total does not include civilian casualties which may not be assessable for some time. The exact total will probably never be known. The estimated casualties include: Permanently 000; wounded and returned to duty, 30,300,000; captured, 10,200,000.
