ON WAY TO WEWAK

AUSTRALIAN LANDING ON NEW GUINEA Washington, May 13. “The Australians have made a successful landing on the coast of New Guinea to the east of Wewak. Simultaneously, other units of the Sixth Division have driven rapidly to the east toward Wewak along the coast,” says General MacArthur’s communique. “The Royal Navy, Australian Navy, United States Air Force and Australian Air Force gave support to this operation aimed at the seizure of Wewak and the capture of airstrips. It will drive remnants of the enemy’s already isolated forces back into the mountains. Systematic neutralisation in the Solomons and New Ireland of isolated enemy remnants continues. “Patrol planes harassed shipping and railway installations from IndoChina to Shanghai. Heavy bombers attacked aerodromes, installations, and shipping in the Netherlands Eas* Indies.”
