1945 FESTIVAL CONCLUDES presentation or prizes FINAL CONCERT LAST EVENING The Nelson Competitions Society’s eleventh annual festival concluded last evening with a final demonstration concert and the presentation of trophies. The Theatre Royal was packed and the audience enjoyed an excellent programme of items by winners of classes in the vocal, instrumental, dancing and elocution sections of the competitions. A highlight of the entertainment was an item by Miss May MacDonald, adjudicator of the elocution classes at the festival Miss MacDonald prefaced her peiformance by explaining that she had spoken lo the competitors a great deal about rhythm in verse, and to illustrate her remarks she recited a lilting Negro poem, “Dese Bones Gwine to Rise Agair.” The judge of the vocal and instrumental section, Mr Len. Barnes, on behalf of Miss Constance MacDonald (dancing adjudicator), Miss May MacDonald (elocution adjudicator), and himself, thanked the committee of,the Competitions Society for the consideration and hospitality which had been accorded to the judges and commended the competitors for the high degree of sportsmanship displayed. Mr T. Murphy, president of the society, thanked all those who had cooperated with the committee in the organisation of a successful festival. He especially thanked the judges for the manner in which they had carried out their duties and for help they had given to teachers and pupils. Special thanks were also extended to the accompanists, Mrs P. Vining and Mrs M. Hishon, to the voluntary women workers and the girls of St. Andrew’s Orphanage, who assisted with morning and afternoon teas, and to the members of the committee. The president then presented the large array of trophies awarded to winning competitors in the festival.
