At a recent meeting of the Tobacco Research Committee, Sir Theodore Rigg, Director of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson, was re-elected chairman for the 1945-46 year.

In accepting the resignation of Mr C. Nash as a member of the Tobacco Research Committee, consequent on his retirement from his position with the National Tobacco Company, it was resolved at the committee’s last meeting that a letter be sent to Mr Nash expressing appreciation of the valuable service he had rendered to the tobacco industry over a long period of years, and tendering the warm thanks of the committee for his co-operation and assistance as a member of th£ committee in the development of the tobacco research organisation.

The Waimea County Council yesterday appointed its chairman, Councillor J. Corder, as its representative to the New Zealand Counties’ Association Conference in Wellington in July.

Mr and Mrs Mansell, Totara street, have received a cable from their son (Happy) Cpl. Mansell who has been a prisoner of war in Germany for four years to say he has arrived in England safe and well.

Mr and Mrs Stan Baigent, of Wakefield, have received news that their son Pte. Bill Baigent has arrived in England fit and well. He has been a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany for the past four years.

Mr B. H. Wood has arrived from Hamilton to take over the position of District Telegraph Engineer at Nelson from Mr L. L. Macey who will retire from the Post and Telegraph Department’s service this month.

Mr and Mrs Gordon Richmond, of Takaka, have received a cable from their son, Squadron Leader lan Richmond, D.F.C., telling of his safe arrival in England after over three years as a prisoner of war in Germany.

Archdeacon Kimberley has been informed by the Minister of Defence that his son, Flying Officer fl. M. Kimberley, who was captured on the Rangitane in November, 1940, has now been liberated and is in the United Kingdom.
