MONTHLY MEETING HELD BRIDGING OF SHAGGERY CREEK AN ALTERNATIVE SUGGESTED An alternative suggestion to the bridging of Shaggery Creek was discussed by the Waimea County Council when its monthly meeting continued yesterday afternoon. In reply to a letter from the council regarding the bridging of the creek, the Resident Engineer, Public Works Department, Nelson, stated that the position—as outlined in the petition from the settlers concerned—was such that a permanent improvement was required. “Any bridge of this magnitude built in native timbers would require renewal at a comparatively early date,” stated the engineer, “and. therefore I cannot recommend this proposal as it stands and the cost of the bridge in permanent materials would be difficult to justify by the benefits to be gained. It appears to me that the most feasible solution of the problem would be to arrange with the Catchment Board tor the sealing off of the overflow from the Motueka river. “I have no doubt but that such a proposal would receive sympathetic consideration from that body and it is quite , possible that the stop-bank which sealed 1 off the channel could be made to serve las an emergency access on the ctokn- | paratively few occasions when jthe I present splash would be rendered unusable by flooding of the Shaggery • creek in conjunction with the bac&ng up of the main river from the lower end of the channel. Your council* is therefore recommended to submd/the problem to the Catchment Board/’ The County Engineer, Mr W. Bullivant, remarked that the proposal was quite a good one except that it did not provide for the flood flow from the Shaggery creek itself. It should give ac- ! cess to the island under most conditions. | Cr. E. S. Wratt said that a move had been made some years ago to seal off the channel and it had been opposed by settlers at Whakarewa because they considered it increased the danger of erosion in that area. It was now the Catchment Board’s duty to watch the interests of property owners in this respect and he therefore moved that the Public Works Department's letter be referred to the board. The motion w'as seconded by Cr. L- A. Higgins and carried. GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE The Minister of Works forwarded a copy of the Housing Improvements Bill and the following committee was set up to consider the Act: Councillors J. Corder, L. A. Higgins, C. H. Sutton, G. Manson and the County Engineer. The Public Works Department, Nelson, wrote regarding the provision of an improved access road to Mr J. Martin’s property at Kaiteriteri. It was resolved that the council offer a grant of £SO towards the cost of the work. A petition was received from 22 Wakefield residents requesting that the creek crossing the road at G. Beatson’s property on the east side of Church Hill be culverted or bridged. The Engineer was instructed to report on the proposal at the next meeting of the board. J. A. C. and M. V. Bell, R.M.D. Richmond, requested the board to clear and open up a drain from O’Connell’s corner to their boundary. The matter was referred to the Engineer and the member for the riding. H. Baigent and Sons, Ltd., Nelson, asked that the condition of the road giving access to their property in the Slippery Valley be improved. The company is to be advised that certain maintenance work is being done on the road but that no metalling can be carried out. Lime and Marble. Ltd., Mapua, were granted permission to remove weathered granite along the road from Riwaka to Ngaio. On the motion of Councillor Higgins it was resolved that the Engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of a bridge over Hoult’s Valley stream.
