POPULAR BANK MANAGER

RETIREMENT OF MR J. N. SMITH On the eve of his retirement Mr J. N. Smith, manager of the Nelson branch of the Bank of N.Z. for the last 15 years, was entertained by clients of the bank yesterday when a presentation was made to him. The gathering, held in the lounge of the Hotel Nelson, was largely attended and was representative of business and farming interests. Mr Frank Harhiltcn. who acted as chairman, paid tribute to Mr Smith as one of the best, if not the best, bank managers that Nelson had had. He said that Mr Smith had always been ready to offer sound, straight advice and that many had cause to remember his good judgment. He had made many friends who were very pleased that in his retirement he was going to remain in Nelson. Other speakers spoke of the good Mr Smith had done for the city and of his work for war loans. He had been unlike the traditional bank manager in that he was most approachable and did not hesitate to offer frank, friendly advise to those requiring it. The chairman, in making the presentation to Mr Smith, congratulated him on his retirement and proposed a toast to the guest with which he was accorded musical honours. Mr Smith, who suitably replied, then introduced Mr R. G. Millen his successor.

Mr Smith was also the recipient of a presentation made by the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Nelson.
