OBITUARY
MR J. E. STONE The death of Mr James Elijah Stone, only son of the late Mr and Mrs John Stone, of the Nelson Reservoir, wellknown pioneer of Nelson, occurred recently. Mr Stone was one of the Pitts Column of the Nelson City Rifles and took part in the Parihaka incident in 1887. Mr Stone was engaged in the early days at the Anchor Foundry, where he served his apprenticeship as a boilermaker. In 1904 he returned to the reservoir as caretaker, and held that position for about 23 years. He then retired and went to live at Stoke, thence to Richmond, with his son, Mr J. C. Stone, where he resided until his death at the age of 84. In 1887 he married Miss Sarah Limmer (eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Wm. Limmer, of Lower Moutere) who pre-deceased him in 1922. Mr Stone is survived by four daughters and two sons—Mrs H. V. Newport (Nelson), Mrs H. 0. Casseis (Orongorongo), Mrs M. R. Ching (Stoke), Mrs J. R. Marris (Tutaki), Mr C. F. Stone (Wairoa), Mr J. C. Stone, (Richmond). There are 18 grandchildren, and 12 great grand children.
