ALLIED DRIVE TO RANGOON RACE TO BEAT MONSOON SWIFT ADVANCE OF GENERAL SLIM’S ARMY RuSby, April 29. A South-east Asia communique states thatf after au advance of 56 miles in 24 hours powerful armoured spearheads, followed by British and Indian infautry, moving south-west along the axis of the main trunk road and railway, are 62 miles from Rangoon, Guerrillas are operating on the flank and ahead, materially assisting the advance. On the west bank of the Irrawaddy our leading troops are five miles from Allanmyo, four miles north-east of Thayetmyo. A Burma correspondent says that our troops have got the Japanese on the run and are making an allout effort to get to Rangoon before the monsoons, which start iu the middle of May. The Fourteenth Army’s lightning drive to the timber town or Touugoo and beyond into lower Burma has become the fastest, most exhilarating advance yet made b.v Lieut.-General Slim's British and Indian troops, writes another correspondent. In 10 days we have covered more than 150 miles. Every day fresh news comes of the growth of the Burmese rebellion against their *elfstyled “liberators.”
