UNRRA OFFICIAL

VISITOR FROM WASHINGTON Wellington, April 28. To discuss with Government officials and with the Council of Organizations for Relief Service Overseas the welfare operations of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. Mr. S. E. Afartz.* chief welfare officer for U.X.R.R.A. in the South-west Pacific area, has come to New Zealand. The welfare section of UjX.R.R.A. is that which works in the fields where relief and re-, habilitation are being provided. Mr.' Martz stated yesterday that he was not personally interested in supplies, which were the responsibility of another section, but he was very much interested in the personnel that could be furnished by New Zealand. Specialists able to advise the member Governments on how the Governments themselves could handle relief problems such as child welfare programmes, camp welfare services, employment scheme and mass feeding were particularly wanted. It was hoped that New Zealand would make it* maximum contribution to that work. The South-west Pacific area includes New Zealand. Australia, the Netherlands East Indies, French Indo-China, and the Philippines. The headquarters of Mr. Martz are in Washington and the office for the area is in Sydney. He spent some time in Australia before coming to New Zealand, and after several days in Wellington he will return to Washington via Australia.
