AT THE PICTURES

State: Commencing Friday next, “Colonel Blimp," starring Anton Walbrook. Deborah laierr. Itcger Livesey. The picture presents a kindly portrayal of Blimp and is all the more effective for suffering the goodnr.tured. stout-hearted, tremendously patriotic and loyal fool gladly. The hero, a courageous, high-born one-track minded, tiemcndouily patriotic Boer War and last war veteran, brilliantly drawn by Roger Livesey. dominates the narrative in circumstances that are both a handsome tribute and gentle reproof of the-old-school-tia tradition. Antqn Walbrook c!< verly amplifies the political point as the Colonel’s frank and understanding antiNazi friend, while Deborah Kerr displays gieat charm and exceptional versatility.

Majestic: To-night and Monday, “Standing Room Only” and a special supporting film, “The Memphis Belle.” Fred MacMurray and Paulette Goddard have the chief roles in the likeable comedy which is the week-end attraction, while Edward Arnold and Roland Young add to the delight of audiences as they further complicate the already delicate situations that arise when a business man -and his pretty secretary arrive in town and fail to find accommodation. These two pose as a butler and a cook and then the fun starts. An unusual film is "Memphis Belle" (in colour! showing happenings on an actual raid by a Flying Fortress over Germany. It is filled with dramatic moments.
