PETAIN’S FIRST REQUEST

PHOTO OF DE GAULLE (Rec 10.15 a.m.) London. April 27. Marshal Petain’s first request after entering his room at Fort Montrouge was for a picture of General de Gaulle, savs the Associated Press of Great Britain Paris correspondent. Policemen guarding him gaped with surprise but obtained a photograph. Madame Petain chose to remain with her husband and they were placed in a small room with two beds, chairs and a 'desk. The room overlooks a courtyard where persons found guilty by purge courts are executed. There are 15 armed guards m the corridor outside the room and on the stairway from the ground floor. The fort’s grounds are heavily patrolled and the gates are guarded. Marshal Petain appears to be m excellent health and his manner is almost jocular. Former Vichy officials, Gene, ral Jean Deoeney and Admiral Leon Blehaulet, accompanied him. Two nurses attended him though he insisted he did not need them. High Court Officials read to Marshal Petain charges against him when he crossed the Swiss frontier.
