EXTENSION OF HOURS

SUBMISSION TO LICENSING COMMISSION Wellington, Apl. 19. Submissions on behalf of a group of individuals were presented by Mr S. J. Collins, public servant, at the Licensing Commission sitting to-day. Among recommendations were the following: L. . atories equal in standard to those in public places and erected near bars; . all bars to conform to one general type; , adequate inspection of premises: sterilisation of glasses; all draught beer to jbe drawn from barrels in view of patrons; elimination of private bars: ! prices to be the same in lounges as in ’ bars: licenses to be granted grocers for the sale of beer: each bar to have seatj ing accommodation and tables for ail j present at any time; system of licenses < for • cabarets, dining saloons and railway and hours should be ex- ; tended until evening. A suggestion in I this regard was that the extension I might apply only to lounges and all I bars in full view of the public. / Dr Siegfried Rothman, electrical en- ! gineer, said there were few restrictions ;on sales in Germany and Italy. A , bottle could be bought from almost any ! grocer up to 8 p.m. Liquor was obtainable at major railway stations, factory canteens and theatre buffets. A j public house was regarded as entirely i separate from a hotel. The latter was I not regarded as a place to go and I drink. A hotel was for the travelling | public . There was little evidence of drunkenness in the streets in those countries. He had never witnessed such conduct there as he had observed in Dillis street on a Saturday afternoon.
