ANNUAL MEETING
AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION SUGGESTIONS FOR INCOMING COMMITTEES The 52nd annual meeting of the Nelson Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at Richmond on Wednesday, 18th April. The president, Mr M. Rogers, was in the chair. W. Best and W. S. Gilbert were re-elected treasurer and auditor reflectively. Enlarging upon the annual report the chairman made mention of the good and, faithful service given over a very long period by three members who did not seek election: Messrs F. C. Page (1918-1944), A. E. Max and G. L. Mead. These men felt that the time had arrived when they should give way to younger men. He also wished to thank Mr A. G. Russell for his service. After briefly extending a hearty welcome to the new members of the committee Mr Rogers vacated the chair.
Mr L. A. Higgins upon taking up the chair referred to the good work done during a very troublesome period by the retiring president. Mr F. C. Page offered his assistance at all times despite the fact that he was not now attached to the committee.
The following were elected life members of the Association: Messrs A. E. Max, F. C. Page and G. L. Mead.
Mr W. O. Shain wrote intimating that a Riding Club was to be formed at Stoke and solicited the Association's help. A letter of commendation is to be forwarded to the Club and the schedule committees asked to take care of classes for their events. The same writer asked that if possible a pony judge be arranged for future shows, and also that shearing exhibitions be arranged. These requests were referred to the incoming committees.
Mr Baigent asked that some special classes in sections be arranged for returned men of the present war only to exhibit.
Mr Ingram stated that the Association should take more care of the agricultural side of the show activities. It was agreed to solicit assistance from the Grain Growers’ Association and also the Vegetable Growers’ Association.
Mr W. Cook called members’ attention to the small number of classes for light draught horses. The president asked that the deletion of dual entries from the light horse section be given effect to. At the conclusion all present were invited to join the president at an afternoon tea function. MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the executive committee of the Association was held at Richmond on Wednuesday afteroonn. Those present were: Messrs M. Rogers (chairman), L. A. Higgins (vice-president), T. H. Robinson (secretary), G, W. Best (treasurer), P. C. Hurst, J. G. Hilyard, G. W. Wilkes, J. G. Ingram, L. P. Russ, F. R. Berryman, F. C. Page, M. A. Blackmore. A. Newman, J. P. Shuttleworth. A. G. Griffen, R. H. Hammond, P. S. Haycock, A. J. H. Croucher. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs N. L. Kerr, D. S. Max, A. E. Max. C. R. Sutton, A. N. Wilkinson, A. C. Challies, Wm. Martin, J. L. Borlase, L. Mead.
The following new members were elected: Messrs Reg. Best (Masonic Hotel), C. J. L. Mollison, C/o Dalgety and Coy. Ltd., Nelson, F. C. Chadwick, R.M.D. Brightwater, Noel Avery, c/o Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Nelson.
An application from the Richmond Miniature Rifle Club for the use of the under portion of the grandstand building was granted upon the usual terms provided this arrangement was acceptab’e to the Army Department. It was decided upon the motion of the president to send the following remit forward to the Royal Agricultural Society: “That this Association is of the opinion that the society would serve a better purpose if shows were held at Palmerston North in the North Island and Christchurch in the South Island instead of holding several shows as at present:”
Arising from a report from the Finance Committee set up to re-arrange mortgages, etc., it was agreed that the following members. Messrs L. A. Higgins, P. C. Hurst. J. G. Ingram, G. W. Wilkes and C. R. Sutton, form a new committee to carry out this work with power to act.
