FIGHTING ON BOUGAINVILLE

OVER 2350 ENEMY DEAD COUNTED Melbourne, April 15. With the killing of more than 600 Japanese in recent actions in southern Bougainville, the total of the enemy dead counted on the island since Australian troops took over from the Americans last November is now 2350. It is reported to-day that bayonet charges and heavy small arms fire by Australians broke Japanese resistance in Tokuku Pass in the fiercest fighting which has occurred in north-east New Guinea. The pass is about two miles south of Dagua airfield and on the line of communications inland to the enemyheld territory of Maprik. Japanese in the area are now being subjected to combined air and ground attacks.
