THE WEATHER

FAIR TO FINE Wellington, This Day. Situation: Depression near the Chathams. anti-cyclone centred on Victoria extends over the Tasman. Forecast to 5 p.m. Sunday: Moderate winds from a westerly quarter with south-westerly freshening at times in the Waimeas. Weather fair to fine. Cold night with some frosts but moderating day temperatures. Further outlook fair.

Snow on Mount Arthur and the higher peaks of the Takaka mountains brought an icy breath of winter to Nelson this morning. A stormy southwesterly wind last night was accompanied by occasional showers of driving rain and vivid flashes of lightning. The weather had cleared by this morning, but there was still a bitterly cold southerly wind and overcast skies reduced the sunshine to only brief glimpses. Yesterday’s total of brigh* sunshine was 8 hours 28 minutes.
