WOOL CONFERENCE
INTEREST IN YORKSHIRE TRADE CIRCLES London, April 12. The outlook for the wool conference is keenly discussed in Yorkshire wool trade circles which expect these intergovernmental discussions to last several days. Significance is attached to the Ministry of Supply announcement that the function of the conference is to “consider and report,” from which it is inferred that the conference may not reach final decisions but will more probably reach agreed proposals for dealing Vith the matter, which will then be for consideration by the four governments concerned. Traders here are convinced that the question of the post-war disposal of wool and marketing as two subjects are inextricably related and it is therefore believed probable that the discussions will cover the whole field of future wool marketing practice. The conference is therefore regarded as one of the most important in wool trade history and one in which the closest co-operation is vitally essential between the Dominions themselves on the one hand and between the United Kingdom and the Dominions on the other hand. It is not too much to suggest that the conference may shape the course of Empire wool trade history for years to come, for it is felt here that even assuming a much expanded world demand for wool after the war, the liquidation of Empire wool accumulatiohs may require considerable time if embarrassment to new production is to be avoided. Another point emphasised in trade circles here is that a proper approach to wool problems of the future calls for intelligent appreciation by wool producers and manufacturers alike of the difficulties of the other.
