AMERICANS TRY TO HOLD HILL
JAP ARTILLERY TOO TOUGH PROGRESS HELD UP ON OKINAWA New York, *pril 12. “While Army troops slogged through mud to make gains on the eastern side of Okinawa the battle for Kakuzu Ridge is not yet over and until it is won our pi ogress down the west coast is stopped,’ says the “New York Times” correspondent. “We have taken Kakuzu Ridge three times but each time have been driven off by the heaviest artillery ever encountered in the Pacific. “At present we hold the saddle of the ridge just north of Kakuzu, but the hill itself is defying our best efforts. It -s only 300 feet high and surmountable, but Japanese artillery is too tough. Japanese in 20 minutes dropped 300 mortar rockets leaving craters 30 feet in circumference and 10 feet deep. ’
