NELSON PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING NEXT MONDAY The NelStm Philosophical Society will hold its first monthly meeting of the season at the Nelson Institute, Hardy street, on Monday next at 8 p.m. when Dr. D. Miller will give an address entitled “Historical Episodes in the Development of New Zealand Entomology.” The speaker will trace the development of entomological science from the time of Captain Cook to the present day, dealing with both the insects and the men concerned; that is, the subject will be largely entomological, biographical and anecdotal. Furthermore, an account will be given of insects as they appear in the mythology and folklore of the ancient Maori of preEuropean times. The address will be based on excerpts from “A History of New Zealand Entomology” that the speaker has been compiling during the past few years. This is the first attempt made to bring together all the data lying behind our entomological service of to-day. and. being quite non-technical, the address should be of general interest. The meeting. as are all meetings of the Philosophical Society, is open to the public.
