LEND-LEASE EXTENSION BILL

SENATOR URGES PASSAGE Washing-ton, Apl. Senator Vandenberg urging the pasage of the Lend-Lease Extension Bill, told the Senate that the United States could no more sensibly withdraw lend-lease before the conclusion of hostilities than they could withdraw the army or navy. He addeds “Few have any illusions that there will ever be any mathematical balance struck between 35 billion dollars expended in aiding other countries and four billions received in reverse lendlease.” He contended that it would be no service to this country or the world if the impression became general that lend-lease could be used for rehabilitation, relief and reconstructions. Senator Vandenberg concluded: "There should be no misunderstanding at home or abroad. Lend-lease ends when hostilities cepse.” AMENDMENT MOVED Senator Taft (Republican, Ohio) introduced in the Senate an amendment which would automatically cut off the export of lend-lease as soon as the ! war ended regardless of prior commit- j ments. He said the Lend-Lease Act contained a loop-hole which would , permit the Government to underwrite billions of dollars worth of lend-lease loans after the war against the express intent of Congress. BILL PASSED (Rec. 12.10 p.m.) Washington, Apl. 10. The Senate by a unanimous vote passed the Bill extending lend-lease to 30th June, 1946.
