FARMERS’ UNION

TAKAKA BRANCH ANNUAL MEETING There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Takaka branch of the F. U., when Mr. S. ft. Holden, president, occupied the chair. The balance sheet was read by the secretary, Mr. K.W. Baird, and revealed a credit balance of £l4O/5/-, including £4O invested in War Savings Certificates, and £lO in Bomber Bonds. The Trading Account showed that well over £2OOO had been handled during the past 4 years and that running expenses had amounted to only 8 per cent of the money handled. The annual report showed, inter alia, that the membership of the branch was higher than ever before —130; that the branch was in a very healthy condition financially and otherwise; that the annual ball had raised a good sum of money which had been handed over to the W.D.F.U. lor the upkeep of the Rest Room; that many progressive remits had been forwarded and had been accepted; that the cull drives and the trading account had saved members a large sum of money. The report also recorded the death of the branch’s only honorary life member, the late Mr. C. Nalder. The report also stressed the need for farmers in the district to grow their own grain for pig feed, and pointed out that oats, barley, and wheat could be grown. By so doing, the farmers would be helping to ease the food problems of the Mother Country, and of the world generally, and would be helping themselves. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Baird for his comprehensive and interesting report. The retiring president, Mr. Holden thanked all members for their support during his two years of office, and particularly the secretary. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. D. Hope; Vice-pres-idents, Messrs. S.L. Holden and G.R. Scott; Secretary, Mr. K.W. Baird; Auditor, Mr. J.W. Murray; Committee: Messrs. P.V. Langford, L. Hitchcock, B.J. Woods, P.R. Reilly, G.G. Haytor, J.W. Page, D. Mason; Trading Account Committee; Messrs. B.J. Wood, S.L. Holden, and K.W. Baird; representatives to the Provincial Executive; The president, secretary, and Mr. C.M.Baird; delegates to the annual Provincial conference; Messrs. H.C.Coppell, G.G.Haytor, L.Hitchcock, R.Lash, G.R.Scott, B.J.Woods; Appeal Committee: Messrs. J.A. Lilly, G.R.Scott, and H. Petterson; Ball Committee; Messrs P.R.Reilly, L.W. Brough, S.L.Holden, B.J. Woods, J.A. Lilly. It was resolved that in future the nominations for the positions of president, vice-president, and committee should be in the hands of the secretary 7 days before the date of the annual meeting. Advice was received that the Fish Memorial Shield had been awarded to the Pakawau school for 1944. The president was appointed delegate to the Golden Bay Boys’ and Girls’ Agriculture Club and a donation of £5 ( was made to the same club.
