COUNTER-ATTACK REPULSED
ENEMY LOSSES ON BOUGAINVILLE Canberra, This Day. In the past week the Japanese on Bougainville have lost more troops than in any previous fighting in the area. Some hundreds more were wiped out on Saturday when enemy forces made their latest counter-attack against Australian positions on southern Bougainville. Early in the morning a tropical moon silhouetted the Japanese, who made a frontal bayonet charge and the first wave of attackers was mown down by short-range small arms fire.
