Melbourne, March 19. ! A 73-ounce lump of ambergris, beI lieved to be worth about £IBSO. has ' been found on Shelly Beach, Portland. The finder. Mr W. R. May, of Mailors 1 Flat. Warrnambool, was holidaying at .the beach ! The amoergris is the largest lump ever found in Victoria. None has been I found here since 1913. I Mr May will probably have to send j the ambergris overseas for sale. Amei rica is the world centre of manufaci turing from ambergris, but before the ! war much of it was used in France, ! particularly in highly-priced perfumes. Ambergris, a sol'd, fatty substance of a dull grey or o!ackish colour, has a peculiar earthy smell. ! It forms in the stomach of the sperm I whale, usually round some irritating • body the whale has swallowed.
