REMORSE
Oh God, have mercy on those “out there,” And listen to this world at prayer. 'We've had our fill of lust and hate, Of sending our men to a bloody fate. We grasped at fame, and wealth, and power, In every single waking hour; And sought for nothing but pleasure and gain. Not thinking of all the resulting pain. Coveting riches and full of desire, We played too often with dangerous fire; To feel with horror its searing pain. To cry, “Oh God, give peace again!” But now You heed not our pleading screams, As gunfire and bombs shatter our dreams. Our greed has brought us chaos and terror, Leaving no margin for foolish error. I want nothing of life but to see the dawn When strife will die and freedom be born; But I ask for those whose lives have been given To be amply rewarded in Thy great heaven. And now with the world I kneel and pray For the hastening of the Victory Day; When the earth will be free from bitter sorrow To greet the brightly shining morrow. The day when all the wars will cease, And we, repentant, hail radiant peace. —“Eve” ’ (Nelson).
