ADVANCE ON OKINAWA
SOUTHERN LINES NEAR KINTOWN INEFFECTIVE ENEMY OPPOSITION Washington, April 5. “Our troops in the northern and southern sectors of Okinawa continued to advance and by 6 p.m. today marines of the Third Amphibious Corps had moved forward generally 8000 to 9000 yards on the Ishikawa Isthmus, the southern end of their lines being in the neighbourhood of Kintown,” says Admiral Nimitz's communique. “Japanese opposition in hte north continues to ba ineffective. “During the Okinawa operations to midnight on sth April 175 soldiers and marines had been killed in action. Naval figures are not available. A total of 798 soldiers and marines have been wounded.
“Organisation for military governments in the area under our control is established and functioning satisfactorily. About 900 civilians have surrendered and we have captured considerable stocks of foodstuffs available for civilian use.”
