RECORD PRICES PAID
YEARLING SALES IN SYDNEY KEEN LAST-MINUTE BUYING Sydney, April 5. Keen last-minute buying at the yearling sales to-day suggested that many buyers had not been able to fulfil commissions at the first two days of the series. Sixty yearlings were sold for 28,620 guineas in the main catalogue and ten in the supplementary catalogue brought 2440 guineas. Unexpected activity left the impression that breeders need not have been so drastic in cutting down their offerings and that the midseason sales will attract unprecedented competition. Altogether a total of 200,565 guineas was paid for 360 yearlings. The previous highest aggregate was 168,235 guineas paid last year for 327 yearlings. The average price for the current series was 557 guineas, a fresh record, the previous highest being 514, achieved last j'ear. A new record was also established' so far as lots bringing 1000 guineas or more was concerned. Eight were sold to-day in this range, bringing the total for the sales to 54. Last year 52 brought 1000 gtJlneas or more.
