CAPTURE OF PANAY CAPITAL

ILOILO IN ALLIED HANDS GREAT HELP FROM GUERRILLAS Washington, March 21. The Japanese garrison in Iloilo, the capital of Panay, has been routed and the town captured. There was dose air support in this operation. Guerrilla elements arc now clearing the coastal plain northwest of Iloilo, says General MacArthur’s communique. They have seized several places. Prior to out landing, guerrilla forces practically cleared the interior coastal sectors and by constant harassing restricted enemy forces to the immediate vicinity of Iloilo. Now except for minor pockets all organised resistance on Panay has been crushed. Approximately 70 per cent, of Iloilo was destroyed by the enemy before our entry but the docks are safe and the harbour area clear. JAP CONVOY KNOCKED BACK Fifth Air Force medium bombers practically destroyed an enemy convoy of six ships off Amoy. They were attempting to run our blockade.
