MeG; H. B. McGlashen. An apology for absence was tendered on behalf of Councillor H. Whilwcll. CORRESPONDENCE The Municipal Association wrote submitting an agreement with the Post and Telegraph Department relative to cost sharing. The previous acceptance of the terms by the council were endorsed and authority given f(y the agreement to be executed. Mr W. A. Coppins applied for dispensation from clause 255 of the Motueka bylaws for the erection of an addition to the rear of his shop, the walls to be covered with concrete board and plaster. It was decided not to accede to the n quest. A letter from the Wairnea Electric Power Board regarding the offer to sell to the council its property adjacent to the council’s yard was considered in committee. Messrs Glasgow, Rout and Cheek wrote requesting information regarding the natural watercourse, through the Waimea Electric Power Board’s property in High street. The letter was referred to the borough solicitor. It was decided that the borough solicitor be instructed to apply to ,the Supreme Court for the sale of a property in the borough in satisfaction of arrears of rates for which judgment had been taken. The council agreed to adopt the New Zealand standard code of building bylaws parts 1 to 9, subject to any alterations required by the consulting engineer. MOTUEKA BEACH AREA Councillor Bennett, speaking in support of an invitation in the Works Committee’s report for the Mayor to take up the question of improvements to the baths and Motueka beach with a view to restoring them to their previous standard, said it was a pity that (he area hacl been allowed to drift into its present state with no responsible body able to make the necessary improvements. The Motueka beach s’.ould be a popular resort, but there was a tendency on the part of the people to go further afield. The children's playarea and band rotunda were. Mr Bennett added, in a dilapidated condition. He suggested that the Mayor take steps to see what improvements could be effected.
The Mayor agreed that the beach had bcc;. attractive and could be made so again. It hacl been contended, he said, that the baths were detrimental to the foreshore and had caused erosion. It had been suggested some time ago by the consulting engineer that the baths be made a detached structure as a means of remedying the trouble. Councillor Webley said it was disappointing to se the baths full of sand and it was up to the interested local bodies to make some effort* to improve the facilities at the beach. The Mayor promised to go further into the matter, and if possible to arrange a conference of the interested parties.
