HUTT DEVELOPMENT

COMMISSION’S INQUIRY Wellington, Sept. 26. Appointed to inquire into and report on certain proposed developmental works, including the provision of harbour facilities near the mouth of the Hutt River, a special commission to-day began a sitting which is expected to occupy a fortnight. The chairman is Sir Francis Frazer, the other members being Mr J. Wood (Wellington) and Mr D. Holderness (Auckland). The commission has under consideration what is described as the first fully co-ordinated scheme of development in New Zealand with balanced economy of land usage, public utilities and services. Transport access to the fast-growing industrial area of Hutt Valley is one of the main features being investigated, with a great deal hinging on the practicability of establishing a harbour there. —P.A.
