THEFT OF MOTOR-CAR TYRE

SIX WEEKS’ IMPRISONMENT In the Magistrate's Court yesterday Leo. Spencer Davies (Mr W. V. R. Fletcher) was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment for the theft of a motor car tyre valued at £6 15s from the garage of Messrs J. G. Ingram and Co. Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M. was on the Bench. Sergeant J. R. Corston said that the garage reported that a tyre had been stolen on 25th September. It was found at the home of the accused, who gave a garbled account of having bought it from an unknown man at a hotel. The man said he would leave the tyre at Ingram’s. Accused’s excuse was that he took the wrong tyre from the garage by mistake. He had promised to pay £3 1 0s for the tyre. The sergeant stressed that it was incredible that anyone would buy a tyre valued at £6 15s, which had never been on the road, in this pig-in-a-poke style from an unknown man. After hearing evidence for the prosecution the Magistrate sentenced the accused, who pleaded not guilty, to six weeks' imprisonment. D.F.C. FOR WANGANUI MAN Wellington, This Day. For courage and devotion to duty which “undoubtedly saved his crew and aircraft from disaster,” Flying Officer Douglis James Naismith Gibson, R.N.Z.A.F., of Wanganui, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, according to official advice received by the Air Department, Wellington.—P.A.
