15 JAPANESE SHIPS SUNK Washington, May 25. A Navy communique announces that a destroyer and 14 merchant vessels have been sunk by United States submarines in the Pacific and the Far East. The vessels were a large cargo transport. a large tanker. two medium cargo transports, seven medium cargo sh : ps. a small transport. a medium tanker and a small tanker. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says 157 Japanese vessels have been reported sunk since 81 h January. 1944. which sharply emphasises the increasing might of the American submarine fleet in the Pacific. Navy authorities acknowledged that many more submarines had joined the Pacific Fleet. The British have also sent more submarines to the Pacific. The Navy also announced that two Grumman Avenger planes, equipped with rocket guns, sank a U-boat early this year. Pilots said there were so many guns on Ihe submarine it looked like a picket fence.
