CLOSER RELATIONS WITH RUSSIA

NELSON BRANCH OF SOCIETY

The first meeting of the Nelson branch of the Society for Closer Relations with Russia was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Waimea street, when there was an excellent attendance. Mr Harry Atmore, Dominion president, superintended the election of officers which resulted as follows:—President, Dr A. F. McLean: vice-president. Mr S. A. Croucher; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. Logan; and a committee of eight. An interesting discussion on the various phases of the movement took place and many questions were put and answered. It was emphasised that the society is ron-sectarian and politically non-par-tisan and exists to promote cultural, diplomatic and economic relations between the people of New Zealand and the people of the U.S.S.R. and to do everything possible to secure victory against Nazi and Fascist aggression. Sir Theodore Rigg gave a very interesting address on Russia and her peoples as he saw them at the close of the last It was announced that a Russian professor had consented to give an address in Nelson under the auspices of the society which already has over 100 members, and regular meetings are being arranged.
