SUNDAY HOLE FORD

EDUCATION BOARD’S REQUEST FOR BRIDGE The difficulties of transporting children from the Maitai Valley to Nelson Central School, especially during the winter season, prompted the Nelson Education Board at its meeting yesterday to urge the council to build a bridge over the ford. Mr H. Barltrop' reported that the school bus driver during last winter several times had to wade through the water when the river was in flood to carry the children to the footbridge across the ford. In very wet weather he had on occasions telephoned for a taxi to come from the city to take the children (some of whom were his own ) from the ford to the school so that their regular attendance at school could be maintained. Board members spoke in appreciative terms of the interest in the welfare of the school children displayed by the bus driver and it was resolved to make representations lo the council to have Sunday Hole ford bridged. 1
