DIRECTION TO WOOLLEN MILL

JOHN HOGAN PROTESTS Wellington, April 17. Claiming that political considerations were behind his direction into Wellington Woollen Company’s mills as a factory hand. John Hogan, publisher of • Democracy” appealed to the Industrial Manpower Committee against this directibn. Decision was reserved. Appellant said the editing and publication of his paper was a full-time job. Jhe paper had been banned until a little more than a year ago and since then it had been considerably enlarged. No one else was capable of editing it. A large number of people felt that it was fighting for the future. Discontinuance of its publication would seriously affect morale. The service he could render in a factory mattered infinitely less. The Manpower Officer, Mr Brennan, said there was a big shortage of labour in Wellington mills. There were 13 grade one men awaiting call-up into the Army, but it had been postponed because of the shortage of labour. In reply to the chairman appellant said he was grade two for military purposes. Discontinuance of the paper would mean severe financial hardship. ‘ This direction into other employment would not have arisen except for political considerations,*’ he said. —P.A.
